Loving with Reckless Abandon
In discussing the many varieties of love that exist in long-term committed relationships, it is clear that there are many definitions. Most couples who stay together seem to “settle in” to a kind of partnership. The honeymoon phase is long gone as they move together in a kind of arrangement with its own rules and idiosyncrasies. They have formed an agreement, separation and divorce is off the table, and they live out the rest of their years “mostly getting along.” It is an accomplishment. Then there are those couples who want more. We often speak about marriage as a “workshop to learn about self” and “loving with reckless abandon.” This involves letting go of our fears, trusting our partner fully and not holding back. One is vulnerable and risks being hurt. If we do not love fully, aren’t we then depriving ourselves of true love? When you love with reckless abandon, you throw caution to the wind and fully embrace what is possible. What gets in the way for you? Exercise: Discuss the concept of loving with reckless abandon with your partner. What would it feel like to love someone so fully? Do you think it is possible?
