I feel like a traitor to mankind and I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but recently, I had to acknowledge a fundamental truth – everyone prefers to be the driver. It is not that women are anxious, over reacting, or ridiculous. For years, we have sat with couples in which the women complain about their husband’s driving: Too fast; too close to the driver in front of them; road rage. The men’s response is always the same – “Get over yourself.” Recently, I was a passenger in a car and low and behold I found myself feeling uneasy. Face it. We all like to be in control. We all prefer to be the driver. There is not something “wrong” with women for asking that the driver slow down or not tailgate so closely. Another related unhelpful dynamic is that when a woman asks that the driver slow down, he steps on the gas. What’s that about? So for all of you who have criticized your spouse for being in the passenger seat, give it a go – let her drive and you be relaxed and ok.
