Kindness & Generosity
What are the key ingredients to having and maintaining loving, healthy relationships?
Not surprising, research shows that couples
who practice kindness and generosity are the
winners! This is not a simple task. It requires
hard work, practicing self-regulation. Couples
who stay regulated feel calm, connected, and
affectionate toward one another. They feel
cared for, understood and validated. With
regular practice, we can achieve some of these
qualities even during an argument. Just as
going to the gym and working out on a regular
basis will lead to stronger muscles and improved overall well-being, practicing self-
regulation leads to greater capacity to stay calm, and to bring a spirit of kindness and
generosity into the relationship.
Kindness and generosity are the antidote to contempt, criticism and hostility which can
be toxic in relationships. In our busy lives it can be quite challenging to build in time to
develop healthy mind habits, however, a little goes a long way. Prioritizing this practice
is a way to keep your personal and couple reservoir full of good will and bring a spirit of
kindness and generosity into your relationship.
