We often hear these words spoken with conviction as though this is an epiphany and the next step is divorce. There is a mystery to love and it is a cruel trick that the bar is set so high by passionate, steamy beginnings, so that when the honeymoon stage fades, people are let down. Understanding the nature of love, the fact that there are many kinds of love in one relationship over time, and accepting the fact that love changes are important truths. “I do not love you the way I once did,” does not mean the relationship is over. Thus defining love is a complex task. Perhaps it is not about loving someone the way you once did, or expecting the fireworks of yore, but understanding that love is supposed to change, mature, and ripen. There is a complex interface between commitment and love.
