Pearl of the Month - April 2015
Sex
Recently, people have asked us why there have been no
Pearls related to the complicated topic of sex in marriage. Not
to be remiss, we thought we would take a stab at it with the
understanding that no Pearl length paragraph could capture
this complex topic (see Esther Perel’s book, Mating In Captivity
for a thoughtful perspective). Many couples struggle with
maintaining intimacy in their marriages while several couples
have reported that since they got separated they have renewed
a robust sex life, not experienced in years. Does the closeness
and predictability of daily life cast a shadow over a couple’s sex life while unlocking the door
allows connection?
Accounting for differing drives and desires, physical and hormonal changes throughout the life
cycle, fatigue, resentments that build up and infiltrate the sexual arena suffice it to say that like
other aspects of relationship, couples need to actively discuss their desires and
disappointments (not blaming other) and not let patterns of malaise interfere with intimacy. A
satisfying sex life can go a long way to helping maintain connection and satisfaction in a
marriage and help to compensate for other struggles couples may be experiencing.
